Spili (Rethymnon, Crete)
Spili is about 30km south of Rethymnon and is famous for the natural springs which feed the fountain in the middle of the village.
Every guidebook shows Spili’s famous Lion Head Fountain sporting 25 impressive lion heads each one spouting cool fresh water.
Given the climate and geography of Crete there aren’t many villages who can boast a natural spring and especially one which delivers 330 cubic meters of water every hour at a constant cooling 13 °C.
It is very impressive and lovely and cooling in the summer. The fountain is surrounded by cafes and restaurants so you can enjoy the sight and sound of the fountain.
The village is very pretty and colourful and you can spend time walking about the tiny cobbled back streets, enjoying the flowers and browsing in the many trinket, olive oil, basket and pottery shops.
Refreshment
A nice place to eat at is Yiannis Taverna, just up from the main square where the school and church are. It’s very authentic and serves tasty traditional Cretan food.
If you are planning on going to Rethymon area it’s well worth dropping in to Spili as it’s very pretty.
